Nothing sparks nostalgia quite like the vintage camper van. These iconic, rounded vehicles epitomize van life and have been featured in countless blogs and photo shoots. However, finding an authentic Westfalia camper van in the U.S. has been a challenge for decades, as they ceased sales here many years ago.
The exciting news is that Westfalia camper vans are making their comeback in the U.S. While the new models may have a different look, the brand remains committed to its core principles of style and design integrity. Although Volkswagen is no longer in the picture, it will forever be a part of Westfalia’s history and the van life culture.
Details about the new vehicles are still sparse, but we can anticipate these camper vans hitting the U.S. market within the next few years. They will retain the iconic pop-up roofs that made the original models popular, and they will feature upgraded amenities and versatile floor plans. Initial information was unveiled at the 2023 RV Dealer Open House.
Reviving an Old Favorite
Westfalia is a well-known name among RV enthusiasts, particularly for its influence on the early days of van life in the U.S. with pop-top Volkswagen models. However, for over two decades, Westfalia models were absent from the U.S. market, focusing their production in Europe. The brand is currently owned by the French Groupe Rapido.
Recognizing the potential for a resurgence in America, the company has decided to return to the states with a new project known as the New Westfalia-Americas company. Sales are expected to commence in 2024, with the headquarters based in Ontario and plans to establish a network of dealers throughout North America.
The Modern Face of Westfalia
The revived Westfalia camper vans will sport a fresh look as they re-enter the American market. Volkswagen vans will no longer be the base vehicle, with the new Westfalia Class B motorhomes built on the Ram ProMaster chassis. This sturdy foundation is ideal for supporting the weight of the new camper vans.
The conversion work will be a partnership with Roadtrek Inc., operating in the United States and Canada. Roadtrek specializes in Class B motorhomes, with many models already using the Ram ProMaster chassis. The collaboration of these two companies promises a powerful and appealing new Westfalia camper van.
Sneak Peek at the New Models
While the new Westfalia camper vans are slated for sale in 2024, specific details remain under wraps. Insights were garnered from the 2023 RV Dealer Open House where Westfalia and Roadtrek introduced a pre-production display model of the new vans.
The new models signify a departure from the nostalgic but slower and less refined old Volkswagen vans. The emphasis is on creating a faster, modernized design with the Ram ProMaster base.
While these vehicles maintain a more rounded profile compared to many other Class B motorhomes, they exude a more robust and action-oriented appearance.
Versatile Floor Plans
At the Elkhart Open House, a single Westfalia model was unveiled, notable for its adaptable design that accommodates up to six passengers. The flexibility arises from various bedding options, including a rear bed that can transform into a queen or king-size bed. Bench seats near the front can be converted into an additional sleeping space with a fold-out mattress.
The signature pop-top, a feature of the original Westfalia models, provides tent-like sleeping space without intruding on the floor plan.
Well-Equipped Kitchen and Bathroom
The new Westfalia models include all the essential amenities. The floor plan encompasses an enclosed wet bath with a cassette toilet and a shower, while a kitchenette boasts a sink and a multi-burner stove for cooking on the go. A cover folds down to create a smooth countertop for meal preparation.
A mini-fridge and freezer, conveniently located near the entrance door, make it easy to access food whether inside or outdoors.
Ample Storage
These new models offer substantial storage space, distinguishing them from old-school Volkswagen conversions. Overhead cabinets line the walls, the kitchenette features multiple drawers and shelves, and there is a large storage compartment under the rear bed. A pass-through door allows you to expand storage into the main living space.
What’s on the Horizon for Westfalia?
The debut of the new camper van has generated considerable excitement. Prospective buyers are eagerly anticipating the return of Westfalia models to the U.S., with a release expected in 2024. Initially, they may only be available in Canada since the conversions are set to be made in Ontario. However, a dealer network is expected to roll out, allowing these RVs to be sold throughout the United States.
It’s important to note that while prototypes and promotional materials have been released, the final product may undergo some changes before hitting the market.
